Applying for an Award for Excellence in Supervision

The ANU Committee for Awards for Excellence in Education invites nominees to submit a portfolio consisting of:

Cover Page (1 page)

One page listing the name, title and position of the team leader and team members, including phone numbers and email addresses; the ANU department/school/centre and College; and a list of contents

Written Statement (8 pages maximum)

The written statement should be presented in order, under the following headings:

1.  Overview

2.  Selection criteria

  1. Clarification of mutual expectations with individual candidates and maintenance of professional working relationships throughout the period of the candidature

  2. Fostering of a climate of intellectual rigour to promote research work of sound standing and the development of a skilled, knowledgeable and ethical researcher

  3. Guidance in planning and undertaking the research process and provision of regular feedback on progress

  4. Developing a climate of intellectual engagement with a broad scholarly community

  5. Systematic and scholarly approach to professional development of supervisory academic practice and skills

The overview provides the opportunity for nominees to commence the written statement with a focus on the specific character of their supervision and achievements. It is recommended that the overview be no more than one page and that it include the nominees' educational or academic philosophy and beliefs, a description of the teaching and research context and an integrated summary of the claims relating to the selection criteria.

The core element of a portfolio is a written statement in which nominees describe their supervisory activities and achievements, and specifically addresses each of the five selection criteria. The written statement is limited to eight A4 pages in total.

Curriculum Vitae (3 pages for individuals; teams may allow 1 additional page per team member)

The curriculum vitae should outline the nominee's educational qualifications, career history and supervisory experience. The curriculum vitae is limited to three A4 pages for nominations from individuals. Teams may extend this limit, but a limit of one page per team member is recommended. Include a list of key publications from each team member.

References (2 references of one A4 page each)

Two references of no more than one A4 page each, are to be provided by people who are able to comment on the nominee's teaching against the selection criteria. One of the referees must be the Head of the nominee's Faculty / Centre / Department / School or College.


Nominations Format

The portfolio application is limited to: cover page (1 page), written statement (8 pages), curriculum vitae (3 pages for individuals and 1 additional page per team member), references (2 pages) and font (minimum 11 point).

Please provide a digital photograph (small, high resolution, head and shoulders).

Paper must be A4 and should be plain white, unlaminated with matte finish. Margins must be at least 2cm with clear definition between paragraphs. Individual pages that do not meet the requirements, for instance by exceeding the pages limits, will be removed.

Nominees to submit the following portfolio by March 15:

  • 8 hard copies of the portfolio
  • 1 digital portfolio
  • 1 digital photograph
