ANU Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education

The ANU Vice-Chancellor's Teaching Awards recognise and encourage excellence in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision at the University. Students and staff are invited to nominate now for the four awards for Excellence in Education. Each award has a value of $4,000 and winners are presented with a testamur at their College graduation ceremony.

Nominate now for the 2009 awards - nominations close November 30.

Portfolios are due by March 15.


Award for Teaching Excellence

Teaching Awards celebrate the ANU's most outstanding university teachers in their fields. Teaching Awards give recognition to teachers (individuals and teams) renowned for the excellence of their teaching, who have outstanding presentation skills and who have made a broad and deep contribution to enhancing the quality of learning and teaching in the ANU.


Citation for an Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning

Citations recognise and reward the diverse contribution that individuals and teams make to the quality of student learning. Citations are awarded to academic, general and sessional staff, and institutional associates, who have made significant contributions to student learning in a specific area of responsibility over a sustained period.


Award for Excellence in Supervision

Supervision Awards recognise a sustained record of strong and innovative commitment to research students, and best practice in introducing students to research and research networks.


Award for a Program That Enhances Learning

Program Awards recognise teaching and learning support programs and services that make an outstanding contribution to the quality of student learning and the quality of the student experience at the ANU.

Who can be nominated?

Academic and general staff:

  • in full-time or fractional employment
  • in continuing or contract positions
  • as individuals - who have been employed at the ANU for at least 2 years
  • or in teams - the team leader and at least 1 team member have been employed at the ANU for at least 2 years
  • and who will be a member of staff at the ANU during the period of the Award Committee's deliberations and decision (ie in the semester after nomination).

Programs:

  • which provide learning and teaching support programs and services

(Please check eligibility criteria in each award)

Who can nominate?

  • Staff who are colleagues of the nominees and are familiar with their teaching or their contribution to the student learning environment or educational experience.
  • Students who are either currently enrolled in a course taught by the nominee or else have been taught or supervised by the nominee within the last three years.
  • Nominations may be made by individuals or by a group of people.

Recipients of the ANU College awards will be automatically nominated by their college Dean for the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Education Awards. 

Nominators should be prepared to make a short supporting statement with their nomination.

Nominations close 30 November 2009, but may be made at any time during the year

Portfolios due 15 March 2010, and to include

  • 8 hard copies of the portfolio
  • 1 digital portfolio
  • 1 digital photograph

The ANU Committee for Awards for Excellence in Education

The Committee will meet in each year to consider the submitted portfolios and select winners in each category.

The committee will comprise of the following people:

  • the Deputy Vice-Chancellor or nominee
  • Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) or nominee
  • a nominee from the Student's Association
  • a PARSA nominee
  • two members of academic staff at the level of lecturer or above, preferably past awardees or nominees for the Australian Awards for University Teaching.
  • the Director, CEDAM
  • other persons as appropriate on the nomination of the Chair

Announcement and Presentation of Award Recipients

Recipients of the Vice-Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Education will be made public through the ANU media and on the CEDAM website. Awards will be presented at the ANU graduation ceremony the following semester. Any prize money will be administered through the recipient's business office.
