Participation
It is expected that candidates will participate in the intellectual life of CEDAM in addition to completing their research degree. All candidates are expected to regularly attend seminars and maintain frequent contact with their supervisors.
Attendance
Part-time candidates must be able to commit 20 hours per week to their PhD, while full-time graduate candidates are expected to commit at least 40 hours per week.
Annual Leave
All research students are entitled to 20 days recreation leave per year as a full-time student. It is expected that you will seek approval from your supervisor before taking leave. If you are on a scholarship this leave is included within your scholarship period and cannot be accumulated or added to. Forms for Research Students
Suspension of Candidature
Candidates who are unable to pursue their course should apply to have their program and, if applicable, scholarship suspended. Applications to suspend must be submitted through the supervisor to the Research Programs Convenor. If you are on prolonged sick leave you should consider suspending from your program, so that the end date of your program can be extended. More information.
Extensions of Candidature
You must have satisfactorily completed all progress milestones such as the Research Progress (Annual) Reports of progress and the Mid Term Review before submitting this request. More information. The maximum periods which may be sought in the first instance are:
- PhD - 6 months for full-time students, or 12 months for part-time students
- MPhil - 3 months for full-time students, or 6 for part-time students.
If you are an overseas candidate, you need to ascertain your visa status if you wish to remain in Australia while on extension. You can apply to submit your thesis after the expiration of your course, but such applications must be made before your course has expired. Forms for Research Students
Employment
Prior to undertaking any employment you should discuss it with your supervisor and read the principles adopted by the ANU in relation to employment. See policy (Currently a full-time graduate degree student at the ANU is permitted to undertake part-time employment up to six hours per week and subject to the prior approval of the supervisor(s) and head of department / centre / unit / program may be permitted to undertake part-time employment up to a total of 20 hours per week during the academic year (i.e. for research students during the 48 weeks in the year they are required to pursue the course).
