Graduate Research Programs

This site sets out a range of information for candidates undertaking a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) in CEDAM to assist with their candidature.

Students who want to undertake a program of graduate research study at ANU can do so through a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or a Master of Philosophy (MPhil). The major component of a research program is a substantial written work, known as a thesis, which investigates a particular subject or issue. A research student works more independently, but is under the direction of an academic supervisor or a supervisory panel of academic staff. Staff in CEDAM are chairs of panels, supervisors, advisers, and the prescribed authority for candidates undertaking research on a diverse range of higher education related topics.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered by CEDAM in the areas of Higher Education (including doctoral education, research supervision, policy, practice, aspects of assessment, evaluation and postdoctoral training) and Academic and Professional Practice (including academic work, teaching, learning and curriculum in higher education, continuing professional learning, and the teaching-research nexus). This is a three year research degree.

Master of Philosophy

The Master of Philosophy degree is offered by CEDAM in the areas of Higher Education and Professional Practice. This is a two year research degree.
