About CEDAM

CEDAM – the Centre for Educational Development and Academic Methods -  is an academic centre with a service role.  The Centre provides support and postgraduate programs for academic staff across all seven ANU Colleges while being formally attached to the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

Dr Gerlese Akerlind is CEDAM's Director. The core staff team consists of  7 academic and 5 general (professional and administrative) staff, but grants and project funding are currently ensuring more staff. CEDAM also hosts a number of Visiting Fellows who contribute expertise in management / leadership and policy research in higher education.

Academic Programs

CEDAM offers graduate coursework programs with specialisations in teaching and learning, research supervision and academic leadership and management. Research degree programs are also available within CEDAM's research areas. All programs are listed on the Study @ CEDAM page.

Research and Projects

CEDAM has two areas of research focus and strength - Higher Education, and Academic and Professional Practice. CEDAM's research occurs through individual endeavour, engagement with other ANU staff, working on funded research projects, and CEDAM's research students. Individuals' areas of research are described on the People page and larger projects on the Projects page.
Research Focus 1:  Higher Education
  • research supervision policy and practice
  • doctoral education and postdoctoral training
  • aspects of assessment and evaluation
Research Focus 2:  Academic and Professional Practice
  • academic work
  • teaching, learning and curriculum in higher education
  • continuing professional learning
  • the teaching-research nexus

Teaching and Professional Development

In addition to graduate coursework, CEDAM offers a flexible program of courses and workshops on aspects of academic practice that provides professional development opportunities for academic staff in their roles as teachers, researchers and leaders. CEDAM staff work closely with other University initiatives such as the ANU Tutors network, the Teaching Forum, Sidecars and the Research Student Development Centre. Consultation with CEDAM staff is available on a one–to–one basis on any aspect of teaching and learning and academic career development.

Research Supervision

CEDAM offers support and development to ensure a strong and innovative commitment to students, and best practice in introducing students to research and research networks.

Teaching & Learning Evaluations

The evaluations team in CEDAM designs, manages and interprets a diverse range of educational evaluations across the ANU (including the ANUSET system). The evaluations team can provide specialised advice and support to academic staff on designing evaluation strategies, conducting surveys and interpreting outcomes. It has expertise in analysing evaluation outcomes and collaboratively developing strategies to improve teaching and learning outcomes.

Communities of Practice

CEDAM actively resources and facilitates the formation of communities of practice to strengthen staff collaboration and practice development at ANU. These communities of practice offer structured, but informal contexts for deeper conversations and engagement of staff with some common interest (such as research-led education or tutoring) seeking to contribute to change within their work place.

Teaching Awards

CEDAM administers the ANU Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education, as well as the national Australian Learning and Teaching Council's (ALTC) Australian Awards for University Teaching. Staff in CEDAM are available for assistance with applications for these awards.
