Promoting Excellence Initiative

The Promoting Excellence Initiative [1] (PEI) is an Australian Learning and Teaching Council [2] (ALTC) funded project.  The Promoting Excellence Initiative (PEI) was established to provide one-off funding to build and/or consolidate the capacity of institutions to engage constructively with the programs of the ALTC. The PEI aims to foster a climate of collaboration and the valuing of diversity and inclusiveness across the sector. By supporting institutions the ALTC seeks to act as a catalyst for the sustainable, long-term enhancement of learning and teaching and the maximisation of opportunities for effective dissemination and adaption of innovation and good practice. 

At the ANU, this two year project addresses the university's strategic need, in the context of changing educational practice and organisational structure, for institution-wide valuing and recognition of teaching and learning. The project is implementing a strategic response to enable ANU staff to respond to ALTC initiatives, in particular the ALTC Grants [3] and Teaching Awards

ALTC Grants

• Supporting potential applicants for the ALTC Educational development grants [3] through workshops and individual application development.
• fostering collaborative practice at both college and cross disciplinary levels at ANU;
• building capacity for staff recognised for their contributions to teaching and learning to promote  sharing and evolution of practice;
• supporting staff to better engage with ALTC through project initiated institutional systems to assist with award and grant applications and information.
  

ALTC Teaching Awards

• Establishing a baseline profile of teaching awards, staff and capacity across the university.
• Building a profile and dataset about teaching award experiences and outcomes based on Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) awardees at ANU.
• Mapping with colleges factors that impact their capacity to respond to Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) initiatives.
• Utilising ALTC teaching award cohort to strategise ways to build an ANU culture that actively values and rewards teaching and learning.
• Evaluating how the teaching awards process at the ANU could sustain both individual and institutional development in teaching and learning.
• Creating Teaching Awards resources including examples, timelines and a searchable database for applicants.

As responsibility for educational quality and standards at ANU rests with the seven ‘colleges’, the PEI project will work with them to enhance organisational capacity to engage with the programs of the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) and to build a collaborative and sustainable teaching and learning culture. Tools and Resources

• Developing databases and systems to manage, link, and inform staff at ANU who are applying for ALTC or ANU grants or awards.

• Developing a set of online resources to inform better practice, and the planning, interpretation and development of quality education at ANU.
